How Cool Roofing Materials Really Pay Off

MegaAdmin • July 18, 2018

If you’re a business owner or the manager of a commercial property, you may already be aware of the fact that cool roofing materials reflect sunlight better than darker materials do, and that they absorb less heat because of that fact. However, there are some other very beneficial advantages of using cool roofing materials that you may not be aware of, which can strengthen your reason for using cool materials. Here are some of the less well-known advantages to using cool roof materials, which you should keep in mind whenever you have a need for installing a new roof, or carrying out repairs on an existing commercial roof.

Energy savings

This is a reason that should be near and dear to the hearts of all property owners and managers, because there can be a very significant savings on utility bills when less energy is used over the course of a period of time. This is the case when you have cooler roofing materials installed as part of your roofing system. The reason for this energy savings is that the cooler materials are able to keep the interior cooler, which means that your inside cooling system doesn’t have to work as hard, and doesn’t have to draw as much energy.

Healthier interior conditions

Studies have shown that in locations which frequently experience heat waves, interior temperatures in commercial buildings can rise to a point which can cause serious health issues for occupants, both employees and patrons. Statistics support the fact that there are fewer major health problems, and even deaths, during severe heat waves because of the ability of cool roofing materials to lower the interior temperature.

Saving the electric grid

Since cool roofing materials contribute to a general reduction in the overall heat canopy of an urban setting, that can lead to as much as a 10% drop in the demand for electricity when air-conditioning is needed by many users. While this may sound somewhat surprising, even a very small drop in temperature on a day that’s extremely warm can have a major impact on reducing the demand for energy.

Improving the condition of nearby buildings

In low-income urban communities which feature a large percentage of residential housing, the construction of buildings and residences is typically of lower quality, with less tree cover in the immediate surroundings. It’s also true that fewer of these buildings are equipped with air-conditioning to make occupants feel more comfortable. When any of these less well-equipped residential buildings are situated next to a commercial building which has a cool roofing system, they will benefit by their proximity to the relatively cooler air mass surrounding the commercial building.

Greater comfort for occupants

Although the greatest impact of cool roofing materials will always be felt by the floor directly beneath the roofing system itself, all occupants who happen to be in a commercial building with a cool roofing system, will benefit from the cooler temperature which is maintained by roofing materials that reflect more heat than they absorb.
