The Importance of a Core Sample

Mike Busche • October 14, 2020

Many building owners become hesitant when told that we will have to cut into their roof to take a core sample. Core samples are an important part of the bidding process when estimating a roof for replacement. It involves a specialized hole saw that allows a roofing contractor to look at the cross-section of the current roof system.

Core Samples allow for many insights into the current roofing system including:

  • Thickness of roof
  • Type and thickness of existing insulation
  • Number of existing roofs
  • Moisture content of existing roof
  • Type of existing decking

This information is important to determine if the current system is available for recovery, partial tear-off or full tear. Each one of these options come with a different price tag.

There is a multitude of options when it comes to a new roofing system and there is not a one size fits all system. Each roof needs to have careful consideration to offer the option that best fits the owner’s needs.
